somber gathering tonight. reporter: a memorial for the victims and a plea for civility. it was an interfaith service, from buddhist to a monk and priest standing together. we pray too for the one who wanted to kill and his family. reporter: mike handa said the shooting has given him pause. i often wondered since then what is it that i said in the past that might have contributed to the kinds of behavior that is permission for people to act out. i believe that to address this thing that we call civility is about being the kind of person that you want to see other people be. reporter: santa clara woman cindy mccloud went to graduate school with congresswoman giffords and just returned from standing vigil. yesterday giffords opened her eyes, thank god. and that s what we should do. reporter: in that spirit the interfaith council which held tonight s conference are planning other gathering to find a way to resolve their differences. the doctors treating congresswo
