MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. Over 400 members of United Steelworkers Local 200 here have struck major aluminum beverage can recycle company Constellium since Dec. 15. Workers on the picket line said the company wants to gut seniority, giving bosses complete control over who works when and where.
They said they’re determined to defend their union. “I’m the third generation in my family to work here. I come from a strong union family. If I crossed the line my daddy would kick my butt and my granddaddy would come back to haunt me,” Kevin Clement said with a chuckle.
THE government was urged to increase financial support for low earners yesterday after the number of people in Scotland in work and claiming universal credit soared this year.
Research by the SNP shows that the number of those requiring in-work support has soared by more than 100,000 to 175,000 this year.
In Scotland, 37 per cent of all universal-credit claimants are now in work, up from 32 per cent last year.
Similar trends are found in England and Wales, with the numbers up from 739,000 to 1.8 million in England and 42,000 to 100,000 in Wales.
The SNP has now urged Chancellor Rishi Sunak to “make work pay” and increase support for those in employment now that the “harsh realities” of the pandemic have kicked in.
