William C. Hsiao, an Economics professor emeritus at the Harvard School of Public Health, spoke about the problems with Americaâs health system and the potential benefits of a single-payer system during a HSPH webinar on Thursday.
After being featured in a popular Chinese-language health systems series by the School of Public Health intended to provide public health expertise to Chinese academics and researchers, Hsiao decided to discuss the U.S. health system again in English.
Hsiao began the webinar by stating he thinks the American healthcare system is âbroken.â In 2019, America spent $3.8 trillion â around 18 percent of its GDP â on healthcare, representing an expenditure 50 percent larger per capita than that of countries like Canada, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. Despite this, the U.S. has âthe worst health outcomes among all these nations,â according to Hsiao.
