CBP Launches $46MM Rail Scanner Replacement Initiative Written by Marybeth Luczak, Executive Editor
“Non-intrusive inspection technology is a force multiplier that allows CBP officers to safely and more efficiently process U.S.-bound cargo,” said William A. Ferrara, Executive Assistant Commissioner of the CBP Office of Field Operations.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will install new rail-cargo scanning systems at 12 rail ports of entry on the U.S. southern and northern land borders.
The $46 million initiative is slated to replace aging equipment with scanners that use “linear accelerators to generate X-rays from electricity rather than radioactive isotopes, producing high-quality images that support faster and more secure cargo inspections,” CBP said.

NEW DELHI: The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has reopened for public comments, the proposed changes to its biometric data collection policies.
Under the current regulations CBP may only conduct pilot programs to collect biometrics at exit, at a limited number of air and sea ports. Further, it may only collect biometrics from a limited population.
The proposed policy would expand the agency’s ability to collect biometric data of non-US citizens upon entry to and departure from the country. It would permit collection of photographs or other biometrics from non-US citizen travellers departing from airports, land ports, seaports, or any other authorized point of departure.

The European Union (EU) also focused on unity this week, seeking to coordinate and improve its vaccination campaigns among Member States. The EU and the United Kingdom (UK) continue to work through implementation of its trade deal, with a post-Brexit financial guarantee requirement causing some concern for shippers. The UK and US reached an agreement on a combined carrier strike group, further cementing the close defense relationship. Meanwhile, the EU is exploring options to address extra-territorial sanctions, such as those imposed by the US, and their impact on EU companies.
