Party leaders chose not to give any candidate the coveted ballot line in this year’s race. Three candidates had interviewed with local party members: Mayor Ben Walsh, an independent, and Democratic challengers Khalid Bey and Michael Greene.

Police, Fire Departments Offer Budget Plan to Finance Panel

MIDDLEBURY — The Board of Finance met with representatives from the fire and police departments on Wednesday, February 24, to review input for the 2021-22 budget. Fire Chief Brett Kales noted a 9 percent increase of $27,748.47 in the proposed budget of $303,649.78. The largest area of increase was for rescue equipment testing at $5,000. Most line items remained flat. There was a 3 percent increase in the fire chief’s salary, which equates to $269.59. The department has a staff of 45 firefighters, 12 junior firefighters, 12 ladies auxiliary members and 12 ambulance auxiliary members and operates 10 fire department vehicles and two ambulances. During the pandemic, the fire department has been training only to the extent allowed by the governor’s guidelines and limiting access to the firehouse.
