The case was reopened in 2017, with testimony indicating that DNA evidence obtained from cigarette butts found at the scene led investigators to identify Boget as a suspect.
Law enforcement officers arrested Boget, who was 28 years old at the time of the killing, in November 2019 in San Antonio, Texas, and extradited him to San Diego County about a month later. Boget remains in custody in lieu of $2 million bail.
