A reasoned hunch paid off when Maywood police who staked out Bergen Town Center captured four members of a tri-state retail theft ring moments after they’d swiped thousands of dollars worth of perfume from an Ulta store in Ramsey.
The crew was believed responsible for a spree at Ulta stores in New Jersey, New Jersey and Connecticut including at the Wayne Town Center over the past several weeks, authorities said.
The quartet had just struck at the Interstate Shopping Center off Route 17 on Thursday when Maywood Detective Sgt. William Phayre headed to the Ulta store at Bergen Town Center further down the highway and waited.

A 64-year-old ex-con with decades of small-time arrests and convictions on his record was charged with stealing tires from a Maywood business.
As in many of his arrests over the years, North Bergen native Fred Worthington was released after borough Detective Christopher Nichols quickly tied him to the West Central Avenue crime.
He charged Worthington with theft, conspiracy and possession of heroin, drug paraphernalia and burglary tools, Detective Sgt. William Phayre said.
Worthington, who also recently had addresses in Cliffside Park and Fairview, has been charged and convicted in several burglary and theft sprees in Hudson, Bergen, Essex and Somerset counties dating back to the 1990s, records show.

A Hackensack woman drove drunk with her 9-year-old son in the front seat, said Maywood police who got help from a good Samaritan who followed her until officers arrived.
Responding to the concerned citizen’s call, Officer Matt Della Bella and Officer Noel Hodgins stopped Shavone Jones, 41, on Passaic Street, Detective Sgt. William Phayre said.
Jones with charged with DWI and child endangerment and released to a responsible adult, the sergeant said.
Police also released the boy to a responsible adult and notified the state Division of Child Protection and Permanency, which Phayre said was conducting its own investigation.
