By CHAD GARLAND | STARS AND STRIPES Published: April 29, 2021 A security forces airman was guarding an air base in Pennsylvania when his idol, former Navy SEAL and podcaster John Gretton “Jocko” Willink rolled up to the gate and asked to enter. Airman 1st Class William Guilfoyle, who prepared for basic training and pushed through technical school with the help of Willink’s podcasts, was thrilled to see the retired naval officer this month at Biddle Air National Guard Base in Horsham, Pa. “I was just blown away to be able to meet him and shake his hand,” said Guilfoyle, a native of Susquehanna, Pa.

LORD VESTEY: 1941-2021
The 3rd Lord Vestey, who has died aged 79, was the half-Australian heir to a meat fortune, the surviving great-grandson of Dame Nellie Melba, and the head of one of the richest families in Britain who, for most of his life, were owners of vast holdings in the Northern Territory and Queensland. Within four generations, the Vesteys went from a Merseyside slaughterhouse to a magnificent Cotswold country house hosting titled grandees and members of the innermost circle of royal courtiers.

The 24 gardens documented in
The Garden State: Inside Victoria s Private Gardens lean towards the grand and the well established. These are the sort of landscapes that feature stately oaks, crab apple walks, lawns and topiary. The names of both 19th-century landscape gardener William Guilfoyle and 20th century designer Edna Walling frequently crop up.
But there is also a selection of more contemporary spaces – often containing a wide suite of Australian plants – that have been designed to accommodate Victoria s increasingly hot and dry conditions.
All except two of the gardens – Cranlana in Toorak and Bickleigh Vale in Mooroolbark – are outside Melbourne, and many are set in dramatic landscapes.
