September 16, 1963. After delays, doubts, fears and hopes, Malaysia day arrived at last with celebrations through-out Sabah.
It heralded another chapter in its colourful history. Deputy Malayan Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak arrived on the eve to attend the ceremony for the proclamation of Independence of Sabah through Malaysia which took place at the town padang.
The padang reverberated as Stephens, Mustapha and Razak led the people three times to the shouts of Merdeka (Independence).
Tun Mustapha Datu Harun became the first Governor while Tun Fuad Stephens the first Chief Minister.
The occasion was witnessed by some 12,000 people and among the parade participants were armed forces personnel, school children, members of the Sabah Mobile police force, sailors from British and Malayan ships, Red Cross, Girl Guides, Boy Scouts and Fire Brigade among others, including the various ethnic groups in the State.
