In 1816, at the age of 13, William Driver ran away from home to seek adventure on the high seas. He began as a cabin boy, but by the age of 21 qualified as a Master Mariner and assumed command of his own ship, the “Charles Doggett.” His mother, with the help of some friends, sewed him a large flag with 24 stars (one for each state at the time) which became the young Captain’s most cherished possession. Tradition is that while leaving Boston Harbor for the first time, his prized flag flying high atop the towering mast, he yelled, “Behold Old Glory!”
