That happened to me this month.
John Willard, a reporter I worked with for a decade at the Quad-City Times, died in 2017 at age 74. His wife, Carol, died a couple of years later.
Last week, I read that they left a $3 million estate to various charities.
John was a reporter and Carol was a secretary.
“I’d be shocked if John ever made more than $35,000 or $40,000,” said Linda Cook, another reporter who worked with us at the Times.
Former Quad-City Times Editor Dan Hayes, demurred on how much Willard may have earned during his career, saying only, “As you know, Scott, reporting is not something where you’re ever going to get rich.”
