Never to be Forgotten: “The Flowers Bank Fourteen”
Today, there was a wreath laying ceremony in Flowers Bank to mark the anniversary of the historic 1797 Public Meeting and the Flowers Bank Fourteen. According to the Institute for Social and Cultural Research, the annual festival to celebrate the event could not be held this year. Instead, the wreath celebrates a pivotal moment in Belize’s history where the decision was made to stay and defend Belize. After word was received that Spanish forces would be coming from the Yucatan, the settlers in Belize voted on at the public meeting on June first, whether to evacuate or stand their ground. Those who cast the deciding votes to remain were fourteen men from the Belize River Valley.
