Nick Cosgrave was born on the family farm in Ballinavary, Davidstown on July 11, 1949, to Nick and Kathleen (née Furlong) of Killogan. He was the second youngest of six children.
He was educated in Davidstown NS and Enniscorthy CBS. He began working in S&AG Davis, Enniscorthy in 1968. Alongside his work he trained as a certified accountant in Waterford IT.
In 1974, Nick decided to embark on a new adventure when he moved to Kitwe in Zambia where he worked as an accountant in a copper mining company. He returned to his beloved County Wexford in 1976 and rejoined Davis s as Financial Controller.
