Chicago community organizers are vowing to continue protests calling for federal charges against Jason Van Dyke, the former Chicago police officer released from a state prison Thursday after serving less than half of his nearly seven-year sentence for killing Black teenager Laquan McDonald
Protesters had gathered across the street from Federal Plaza downtown Thursday afternoon calling for Jason Van Dyke, the former Chicago police officer who fatally shot Laquan McDonald, to face federal charges.
Jason Van Dyke has served three years of a nearly seven-year sentence. He was convicted of second-degree murder in the teenager’s death, which put a spotlight on police misconduct.
