BYUH retiree Bill Neal remembered for his aloha and Christlike example

The aloha spirit was strong, said members of the BYU-Hawaii ohana, as they gathered in person in Utah and via Zoom to remember retiree and former business professor and university administrator William “Bill” Neal on June 10. His family reported he passed away peacefully on June 4 at the age of 73.

Joining the Church in Hong Kong when she was 10 years old, senior Taffie Kwok said her dream was to come to BYU–Hawaii and fulfilling that dream has changed her life. She graduates on April 16 majoring in communications and minoring in marketing and entrepreneurship.

Skate, sleep, repeat: Alumnus James Astle creates new documentary out of 400-mile skateboard trek across the Philippines

On a wooden board with four wheels and a camera in hand, James Astle, a special instructor for the Willes Center, rolled through the Philippines. Astle had no camera crew or partner along for the ride, but he said he found support from the Filipino people.

Photo by BYUH Willes Center From getting plastic out of the ocean, opening a barbershop and selling affordable goat milk products in the Philippines to fight poverty, BYU–Hawaii students are committed to serving others around the world. Ali Barney, one of the second-place winners in the Math & Sciences category of the Empower Your Dreams Competition and part of the team Poly Plastic Fuel, a business that started to clear the oceans of plastic, said, “We envision taking our project to Kiribati, not so that we can earn money and get rich, but so that we can help solve [this] problem. We want to help make their lives better.” She said they want to share their technology with the world.
