[laughter] jenna: a sincere apology? i don t know. they all agree on one thing, that it s somebody else s fault. our chief congressional corps responsibility, mike emanuel, is live on capitol hill. so, mike, house speaker john boehner just talked after meeting with members. what are the big headlines from what he s saying today? reporter: well, jenna, he says the american people don t want their government shut down, and neither does he. while funding and reopening the government is the battle of the moment, the issue duh du jour, there s also the upcoming issue of the government about to hit its debt ceiling. this isn t some damn game. the american people don t want their government shut down, and neither do i. i don t believe that we should default on our debt. it s not good for our country. but after 55 years of spending more than what you bring in, something ought to be addressed.
republican and democratic votes to increase the debt limit, if necessary, and avoid the financial tailspin. but in the meeting today, the speaker denied he would use those votes, and this come as the battle continues to devolve into more political finger pointing. we cannot reach the debt ceiling without structural reforms. right now the federal government is partially shut down because harry reid and barack obama have forced a shutdown. the single greatest threat to our economy and to our businesses, like this one, is not the afford affordable care act, it s the willingness of the republicans in congress to stop refighting a settled election or making the demands that have nothing to do with the budget. they need to move on to the actual business of governing. he will not negotiate. at some point we ve got to allow the process that our founders gave us to work out. some recent stories have even suggested that the speaker s keeping the government shut down
the analogy sounds funny. the problem is the toddlers could topple the economy. exactly. well, that s the whole issue here, to what degree are they able to bring the economy down. will john boehner at the end of the day have to do what he did with the tax bill, which is basically cede control of the house more or less to the democrats and have most of his party vote against something but allow a vote to come up that will let democrats and nancy pelosi yet again rescue the day. okay, jared. i want to play you something the president said on monday. you referenced it yourself. take a listen. they will not collect or ransom an exchange for not crashing the american economy. the financial well-being of the american people is not leverage to be used. jared, i put it to you, do they not realize this fight isn t just hurting the economy. it s also helping this president look like the only grown-up in
quiver. we re going to have to compromise on fiscal issues and the issues you re talk about. one thing about john boehner, he keeps his eye on the prize. he knows for example, if gun control comes up and it s closing the loophole and getting rid of the large capacity magazine, in philadelphia there are three suburban republicans, somewhat moderate conservatives. they vote against those gun control measures, they re toast. they re toast. so there are certain things that john boehner has to do but he s got tremendous leverage as long as he applies the hastert rule. the conventional wisdom is if you thought the fiscal cliff battle was bad, you are ain t something nothing yet. but is there a level of fatigue, of discontent that members are hearing from their constituents? could the infusion of new blood make a difference? do you see any way in which any of these big fights is any easier than the one we just saw? i m not as optimistic about
