JOLIET, Ill. - Joliet police officers shot and killed a teen armed with a BB gun as he allegedly pointed the gun at the officers Tuesday evening in the far southwest suburb. The teen was identified as 19-year-old Joseph Casten of Naperville, according to Joliet police. Officers were called about 6:30 p.m. to a man threatening to shoot people in the 800 block of Second Avenue and found Casten holding what appeared to be a black handgun, Joliet police said in a statement.

Man Killed by Joliet Police Had BB Gun, Had Called 911 to Summon Authorities to Scene: Investigators

“I heard about 10 to 15 shots. It sounded like a shootout out there,” witness Reggie Phillips said. Witnesses say authorities immediately began CPR on Casten, who was taken to Silver Cross Hospital and was later pronounced dead. On Wednesday, the Will County Coroner’s Office ruled that Casten had died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds. Residents of a neighborhood in suburban Joliet recounted a shooting Tuesday evening in which one witness said she saw police shoot a man, hearing more than a dozen gunshots, with another saying she saw officers performing CPR on a person on the ground. One witness said she saw officers shoot a man who looked to be between the ages of 19 and 21, hearing more than a dozen gunshots as she took cover inside her home.
