After more than 14 months of life torn asunder by the pandemic, the holiday weekend brought no small measure of relief as Californians cautiously resumed doing the things they normally do, starting with barbecues and trips to the beach.

Standing ovations, emotion and waiata enveloped the halls of power today for the second time in two days as Hawke s Bay Regional Council voted unanimously to introduce a Maori wards structure for next year s local body elections.

The Regional Council is proposing an ambitious tree planting solution to address the region’s significant erosion challenges in a way that retains and strengthens pastoral farms.

The Hawke s Bay Regional Council is proposing an ambitious tree planting solution to protect and strengthen as much as 250,000 hectares of what it calls highly-erodable and vulnerable land.
In a trial named Right Tree Right Place , the Council will offer a loan and other funding mechanisms to landowners to plant trees on the land, with economic and environmental benefits, from manuka, honey, timber and horticulture options with the greatest potential to deliver a return and offset loan repayments.
