Nature News: Hooded mergansers a favorite sign of winter

Nature News: Hooded mergansers a favorite sign of winter By Susan Pike I was watching a flock of buffleheads bob at the surface of a tidal pool that was flooded with water, it being full high tide. There is something fun about birds that shift their range with the season, that tell you that it is winter, or spring is coming. Buffleheads are in the winter-sign category around here. They spend the summer in northern forests, breeding near lakes and ponds. We see them in the fall as they migrate to the open water of the coast where they spend the winter hunting in our tidal streams and saltwater bays. They are fairly common around here - and one of my favorite signs of winter.
