John Desko put both hands on his head and stared at the Carrier Dome turf beneath him. For the previous 35 minutes, heâd paced the Syracuse sidelines, yelling at players when they made errant passes, raising his arms in confusion when their clear attempts failed, trying to find the elusive solution thatâd help the Orange scrape away at a North Carolina lead that kept growing. But this time, with his gray mask resting on his chin and UNC players celebrating in front of him, Dekso stood still at the 25-yard line.
A cross-checking penalty by Grant Murphy with 10 minutes left in the third quarter erased a Drake Porter save seconds earlier. Syracuse trailed by eight, but the Tar Heels had already peppered its cage with six shots before the Orange located their second. Thatâs what happens when one defensive breakdown after another lumps together, when one elusive solution multiplied and becomes more difficult to fix.
