chief of staff to eric cantor. van, let me get your reaction to what the impact was. how will boehner s resignation impact, from your perspective, this it republican presidential race? i mean, i think in some ways he was like the person keeping asylum in order. who knows what s going to happen. i think it e throws some raw meat to this pop list uprising in the republican party that s really been dragging the party further and further to the ri t right. i don t think you can look at this party now when boehner, who is as conservative as anybody is considered a a moderate and too liberal to lead this party, you have a a right wing party. i don t know how that party can win a general election. you re a veteran and political campaigns. what s the impact? we lost yogi bah ra this week. republicans are coming to a fork
in the road. the question is whether or not they take it. we ll see two different options. one is an option we hear and i saw in my time working for majority e leader eric cantor, working with the boehner office really closely, there were a lot of people who wanted to fight. we could fight obama and fight the democrats nonstop. . or do we want to have a strategy of landing punches, a strategy to win the round, a strategy to win the fight. if we do that route, we ll see who the next speaker is. my sense is kevin mccarthy. he can hopefully unify the party to go in that direction of trying to win battles instead of just having battles all the time. he s the majority leader, the number two republican in the house of representatives. will boehner s resignation bring republicans closer together or further apart? i think it s a bad day for the republican conference, wolf. i have been speaking to members this morning since the announcement. basically, there are a lot of people who voted fo
that s a signal to the house but they didn t go so far as to be able to stop the president s specific actions on immigration. kristen? i want to head over to you, luke. you heard kelly underscore that point that this is not finished until its finished and we heard from congressman gutierrez that he s a no vote. will boehner get the 218 votes he needs? reporter: well kristen, about an hour and a half ago the house moved to a vote on the rule and for the nonwonky washingtonians out there, it was a parliamentary procedural vote to move forward on overall final passage of this tree three-week funding of the department of homeland security. there is an expectation it may be tough but they were able to get 230 republican votes. so there s 246 house republicans and it seems from where we stand right now, that they should be okay for final passage. there s going to be some conservatives that are upset
obama and pelosi to get your vote. you said you would fight amnesty tooth and nail and you didn t. this was august of 2010. if we get the majority boehner will serve one term. he ll not serve more than one term. they were wrong. i was right. it would take a fight to change speakers and that s what it s time to do. is there a coup by conservatives? will boehner get dumped? no. he only had a 12-vote republican cushion two years ago and not enough republicans defected then to have him lose his job. he ll keep his job. i m not saying that dissidents don t have legitimate complaints. when you make trains run on time in congress you run over good government. i m appalled that congressmen have three hours to read a bill
when we run both sides of congress. there s a semi-had reasonable option and totally unreasonable option, almost every time the house goes with the total lay unreasonable option. not as if boehner has do this with bipartisan majority that s the way business has been done in the house for a couple hundred years, the question is will boehner once he gets reelected in january, will boehner acknowledge reality and actually start passing bigger and more important pieces of legislation using this across the aisle nancy pelosi thing, and he might do that. i think that s the interesting play. will boehner fess up, except reality and actually embrace bipartisanship.
