devastating wildfire outbreaks in texas history. it s not just huge parts of the lone star state that are on fire. parts of california are burning as well. abc s diana alvear joins from us los angeles with more. reporter: rob and tanya, good morning. months of drought and days of high winds have created the perfect recipe for a massive wildfire. and that fire is 0% contained. simply put, it is a monster. the bastrop fire has consumed 600 homes. the most destroyed by a single fire in texas history.y. we got our kids and our pets out. so we just want to know if it s still there or not. reporter: 16 miles long and four miles wide, the austin area blaze is the biggest of dozens of fires in the state. in total, these fires have destroyed more than 1,000 homes. at this point we re just urging people to avoid any outdoor activity which could conceivably start a fire. reporter: governor rick perry has put his presidential campaign on hold to tour the
10:00 p.m. eastern. two more people died in texas in one of the most devastating wildfire outbreaks in that state s history. a total of four died, 1,000 homes destroyed, and several thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate. kurt gregory has more. reporter: as the raging flames continue a team of more than 1,200 firefighters is hoping another day with light winds will help them stop a massive wildfire in texas that is 18 miles long, five miles wide, and growing. fire jumped all over the place. we re doing a little firing to get it back on our terms. reporter: the fire burning just outside austin has already destroyed more than 500 homes, more than 5,000 people are living in shelters. many watching the fire from a distance. and wondering. looking at the fire right now and i m thinking, gosh, that could be my property that just went up in smoke.
