Just 16 minutes ago, a 3.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Kaktovik, North Slope, Alaska, USA. The tremor was recorded early evening on Sunday 14 March 2021 at 7:17 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.1 earthquake as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Kaktovik (pop. 240, 43 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.

A very shallow magnitude 3.7 earthquake was reported in the evening near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Sunday 14 March 2021 at 8:59 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 0.5 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
User reports estimate the perceived ground shaking intensity according to the MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity) scale.

it felt like my building was toppling over. It swayed back and forth i heard a loud deep thundering roar right before I felt the swaying/shaking. Our pictures were swinging, our furniture slightly moved (we have slippery tile floors) the trees shook. That was scary | 6 users found this interesting.
