A Dutch first: Refueling ships with hydrogen at floating solar islands

A Dutch first: Refueling ships with hydrogen at floating solar islands February 11, 2021, by Amir Garanovic Powering ships with hydrogen that can be refueled at offshore floating solar islands sounds like a perfect sustainable shipping alternative. Now, the idea is coming closer to reality in the Netherlands with a prototype of such solar island set for testing on the Waal near IJzendoorn through a joint effort by SolarDuck and Voyex. Netherlands Develops Floating Green Hydrogen Bunker Production

Netherlands Develops Floating Green Hydrogen Bunker Production by Ship & Bunker News Team Tuesday February 2, 2021 A floating green hydrogen production facility to refuel ships may soon be coming to the Netherlands. SolarDuck plan to build the facility near the port of IJzendoorn, the companies said in a press release on Friday. The Province of Gelderland will provide 350,000 euros of funding for the project. SolarDuck will provide four linked platforms, each equipped with 39 solar panels, which will provide power to a 10 kw electrolyzer producing hydrogen. Testing will start from April 2021. The hydrogen will be bonded to an oil-like liquid allowing it to be transferred more easily.

To make inland shipping more sustainable, SolarDuck and Voyex announced a R&D-partnership to enable emission-free sailing by using hydrogen. It’s safe, easy, economic and technically feasible. Also there won’t be a need for fuel transport because refueling takes place right at the source: the floating solar island on the Waal on which testing will commence in April 2021. “The innovative power lies in combining technologies”, according to Koen Burgers, CEO of SolarDuck. “If upscaled, a solar island at sea and on rivers can offer
