SPRINGFIELD The Illinois economy shrank by 4% in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on many of its sectors, although there were signs of a recovery taking place late in the year.
Those preliminary numbers, released last week by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Economic Analysis, showed that the leisure, hospitality and food service sector was the hardest hit by the pandemic, reporting a nearly 30% drop in economic output for the year.
That was due to the forced closure of bars, restaurants, theaters, amusement parks and most tourist attractions in the early phases of the pandemic, as well as the cancellation of large conventions and business meetings.

ROCKFORD Raze or rehab?
That’s the lingering question concerning the future of the Rockford Housing Authority’s vacant Brewington Oaks housing complex on Seminary Street.
Two-and-a-half years after receiving permission from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to tear down the twin 14-story towers, the housing authority is weighing proposals from developers on the future use of the site.
“The only decision going before the Rockford Housing Authority board at this time is whether or not to demolish Brewington Oaks,” housing authority CEO Laura Snyder said in an email. “The board needs to decide if they would entertain a redevelopment concept that would allow the towers to remain intact.”
