the isis, for example, and trying to lure them in to joining their caliphate in syria. a few hundreds have gone there so far. the concern now is what, if any indonesians, have come back here from syria, came back here more determined or more capable of launching attacks in indonesia. kathy, let s talk about that. there has been no claim of responsibility at this point, at least. it is fairly early. but we know that there has been heightened alert there in jakarta and across indonesia for fears of this east indonesia. talk to us about that group. how many people are involved. the leader, what sort of threat they pose, and what sort of attacks they have carried out in the past. reporter: well, you know, we spoke to several terror analysts here and even police authorities
low. although, there were some concerns earlier there may be more victims in the cafe when it happened. we haven t heard any more information about that yet. we have to point out that the counterterrorism authorities here, anti-terrorism police, e even the police force in general, they re highly trained simply because indonesia has been a target of many attacks in the past. you have bigger ones that had more casualties here. and they ve got a lot of training from their counterparts from australia and the united states. and they re very highly trained. the one aspect of the counterterrorism efforts here that s been commended here. what authorities said that they were focusing more was a soft approach, and trying to stop the radicalization of many indonesian muslims who may be attracted to the teachings of
radicalization does not spread. it s still a minority of groups who espouse to launch terror attacks in indonesia. all right. cnn s kathy joining us there from central jakarta and clarifying, six civilians killed, perhaps seven, and these numbers may rise. at this point, we know one of them is a foreigner. we do not know the nationality of that particular victim. thank you so much, kathy, for joining us. we ll return to you very soon. and at this moment, it s just past 3:00 p.m. there in jakarta. the it s the afternoon. this unfolded in the past three or four hours. this attack taking place in the middle of the day in a busy part of the city. for people there, it was extremely frightening. earlier i spoke with jeremy dougl douglas whose with the u.n. office. he witnessed the attack and earlier told me what he saw.
let s get you the latest information on our breaking news out of jakarta. police say they ve killed four people who launched a series of gun and bomb attacks. there s a lot of confusion right now. this is a fluid situation as we have been told earlier that pun policeman may have been killed. it s worth noting that no one has claimed responsibility at this point. but the country has been on high alert over threats from a terror group linked to isis. the country s president calls the attacks an act of terror. clearly that is what we re dealing with here as to who exactly, they re not completely sure, but they are fairly sure that there is a link here with isis. but we re yet to get confirmation of that. when we re looking, the number of killed in this in the
statement, urging indonesians not to speculate on who may be behind the attacks. many people are believing that possibly isis could be behind this. but there are a lot of other suspects in the area. it looked a lot like the attacks that happened in paris. this is a group, isis, and its oko horts and affiliates that s growing rapidly and stronger around the world. this is a threat now that faces us all. indonesia in the spotlight. but it s not been confirmed who s behind these attack. no one has claimed responsibility. but as john just pointed out, we are hearing from the press agency, now reporting that the indonesian president is calling the jakarta blasts acts of terror. we ll continue to follow the situation for you. jeremy douglas is with the
