Surprise Victoria goaltending choice Keegan Maddocks, making his first career WHL start, received a rude welcome as David Kope scored on him just 26 seconds into the game. Maddocks settled into the game to make 30 saves. Cristiano Nicholas, also making his first career WHL start, blocked 31 shots for Kelowna. There is clearly a lot of feeling out for the future going on during this pandemic-abbreviated campaign.

Two major positives for the Portland Winterhawks Saturday night: Seth Jarvis finally getting some reward for effort, and the power play breaking out. Jarvis had a hat trick against the Seattle Thunderbirds in a season where his puck luck hasn’t always been there. Two of those goals were on the power play, boosting the numbers of a unit that surprisingly has been near the bottom of the league. The win put them three points ahead of Seattle for 2nd place in the WHL’s US Division, and another win in the Sunday rematch would put them in the driver’s seat for finishing 2nd.

The WHL Central Division will begin its 24-game mini-season just one week from today.
The WHL has announced the first two weeks of the Central Division schedule for the 2020-21 Regular Season!
The league’s East Division will open in a hub in Regina on March 12
th with no fans.
The U.S. Division (which now includes Don Nachbaur of P.G. as an associate coach with the Tri-City Americans) will get going on March 19
th.
That leaves the B.C. Division still waiting for the official go-ahead.

Calgary, Alta. – The Western Hockey League announced today that the WHL’s U.S. Division will begin the 2020-21 WHL Regular Season on Friday, March 19. This follows an update from Washington State regarding Sporting Activities COVID-19 Requirements issued on February 1, which allows the WHL to return to play in Washington State.
The WHL’s five U.S. Division teams – the Everett Silvertips, Portland Winterhawks, Seattle Thunderbirds, Spokane Chiefs, and Tri-City Americans – will play games exclusively within the Division during the 2020-21 Regular Season. The 2020-21 WHL Regular Season schedule for the U.S. Division will be announced at a later date.
