Derwin and Vicki Gray tell BYU student-athletes to ‘be the change’ in efforts to ‘root out racism’ BYU Athletics alumni Derwin and Vicki Gray were invited to speak to BYU student-athletes during Black History Month on Feb. 16-17, sharing a message centered on “being the change you want to see,” in efforts to “root out racism.” BYU Athletic Director Tom Holmoe and Senior Associate Athletic Director Liz Darger reached out to the Grays in January, and the couple accepted the invitation to return to their alma mater where they met and addressed current student-athletes. Their unique experiences as minority and non-Latter-day Saint student-athletes at BYU serve the department’s goals of inspiring and creating a more inclusive and diverse athletic program.

BYU Athletics hires associate athletic director for diversity and inclusion BYU Athletic Director Tom Holmoe announced on Feb. 12 the hiring of Whitney Johnson as the program’s first Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development, Diversity and Inclusion. “Student-athletes are the center of everything we do. Providing them with the support they need is essential,” Holmoe said in a press release. “Specifically over the past year, many diversity and inclusion issues have come to light that are prevalent in our nation, community and BYU Athletics family. These are not new issues. They are things we’ve been working on. We must be unified and work diligently to better educate and empower each other, to love one another and respect one another. We are so glad to have Whitney help us do so.”

(KPLC) - McNeese women’s basketball still felt the lingering effects of COVID 19 amongst the program in the past month, played shorthanded here Monday night in a 66-47 Southland Conference loss to Incarnate Word. McNeese (4-9, 4-2 SLC) entered the game with only eight players and ended the game having only four on the court in the final minute of the game. The Cowgirls played without starters Shaela Gardner and Claralee Richard along with Whitney Johnson who all missed the game due to COVID protocol. Also missing the game was Elizabeth Critton who is still nursing an injury.

For the second game in a row, McNeese (4-7, 4-0 SLC) had four players score in double figures despite being without its leading scorer and rebound in Divine Tanks for the second straight game. “What a tremendous team win by these young ladies,” said head coach Kacie Cryer. “To come into Hammond and compete with toughness like we did tonight is unbelievable. As a staff, we couldn’t be prouder. We continue to have players step up and just get it done.”
