The Whitley County Health Department’s annual Child Abuse Prevention Walk in Corbin on Saturday sought to bring awareness to child abuse in the community. The walk is an annual event to build up awareness in the community that everybody has the ability to do something to help a child, said Kathy Lay, a health educator at the Whitley County Health Department. “If you have that opportunity to help a child, or you see something, you need to report it,” said Lay. The Corbin walk is one of four that takes places throughout the year. Each year, two walks happen for child abuse prevention while another two occur for suicide awareness. One of each walk takes place in Corbin with the other taking place in Williamsburg.

On Tuesday, Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce members heard an update on the future of Corbin s harness racing facility and Williamsburg s sister facility from Keeneland s Chief Operating Office Vince Gabbert. Gabbert said the plan is for construction to begin in mid-June at the Williamsburg location off Exit 11 on Penny Lane near the Whitley County Health Department.

Members of the community have all been impacted differently with some feeling the effects of the virus more than others. Health official battles misinformation and public stigma “I had a bad feeling about it,” said Marcy Rein, the director of public health at the Whitley County Health Department. “It felt a little bit like a train coming, but you can’t quite tell how far away it is, but you know that it is coming.”
