SW Virginia vaccination rates trail state, national averages

May.24 Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Vice Dean Joshua Sharfstein discusses making sense of travel restrictions and why it is not yet time to relax in the fight against Covid-19. The Bloomberg School of Public Health is supported by Michael R. Bloomberg, founder and majority owner of Bloomberg LP, the parent company of Bloomberg News. Some five months after the Bristol region’s first COVID-19 vaccine was administered, less than a third of area residents have been vaccinated and the pace, of late, has nearly stalled. State health departments report about 37% of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia residents have received at least one dose — compared to 48% of the entire U.S. population — while 31% of this region’s residents are fully vaccinated against the novel coronavirus. That compares to 38% fully vaccinated nationwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Vaccine appointments no longer required at Northeast Regional Health Departments

Health departments under the Northeast Tennessee Regional Health office will no longer require vaccine appointments, though they remain available.  According to a release from the NERHO, health departments serving Carter, Greene, Hancock, Hawkins, Johnson, Unicoi and Washington counties will be open Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. to administer vaccines. The sites will use the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines.  Vaccines are available to everyone 16 and older in the state, though 16 and 17-year-olds can only receive the Pfizer-BioNTech shot. For questions, call the Northeast Regional Information Line at (423) 979-4689. To schedule an appointment, visit vaccinate.tn.gov or go to covidvaccinefinder.org to find another local provider.
