women. he established it s posh to me, too. i support it. right, you sure do. he established the white house council on women and girls. he has worked to, through the small business administration, get more women into the workforce, into the economy, starting up businesses, making sure they have access to capital. he has done more for women, in my opinion, than any president in my recent memory. in my lifetime. and he did it from day one. so i m surprised by these polls, and i think women really ought to look at the data. but then you ve got herman cain and the insanity of that candidacy. before that sarah palin, who clearly wasn t ready to president of the united states being floated. our good friend donald trump being in first place for awhile. it was it was for many months a party that was in search of itself. and it damaged its brand. i think, though, again you look at the latest polls, it s pretty close. what has the tea party done
own. the democrats love it. they think it really shows mitt romney at his most awkward. but if the fight is for independent, undecided women voters, do you think this is an issue that s weighty enough to resonate? yeah, because i think women care about the economy. they want jobs, and they, by the way, want to be paid the same as their male counterparts. and that comment the other night made by mitt romney at the debate showed, first of all, that he was at the very least misleading about exactly what he did with those binders. he says he sought them out and asked for lists of women to hire. the truth, apparently, is that both candidates running for governor were given binders with names of women in them. so he changed that story around to fit the narrative of the night. the bigger picture is, he wouldn t have supported the lilly ledbetter act, which is the first act first piece of legislation the president signed when in office. the president set up the white house council on women
it was very weird. and equal pay is incredibly important, i think. and i think the president did a good job. i see so much more that this administration has done with the white house council on women and girls and the small business administration in terms of not just working on equal pay but access to capital and other things that help lift women up. but he made a good point tying it to the family and not making it just a women s issue. david gregory, you look at the polls and see a lot of the women breaking mitt romney s way. they re breaking mitt romney s way according to usa today because there are a lot of women who are struggling in this economy, and they believe mitt romney s got a better chance to get them back to work. that s what i don t get. if that s indeed happening and we have seen it, then i think that s exactly right, which is the broader economic argument, maybe what s resonating is the idea that the women s vote is not just tied up in the social issues, part
white house council on women and girls. i can t believe that this is even an issue today and that this is a problem. they then passed the lily ledbetter act. they have been slowly trying very hard to crack the code on this. and i have to tell you, they have credibility. they have history on their side. the white house has a record on their side. i don t know anyone who could say this is pure politics. of course, everything is political. but not pure. they have started from the get go, this presidency has been working on this and republicans just want to say no. i think the obama people believe what they are trying to do here. the timing of the vote is pure politics. what s going to happen is about three, four months from now, there s going to be ads showing all these guys and all these senate races around the country which are much closer than anybody expected that they voted against equal pay for women. it s a crusher. the most influential voting
the economy so beautifully. and they are politically wins issues. look, they have been at it for ever since this president got into office, absolutely, working very hard on this issue. white house council on women and girls as well as hillary clinton around the world trying to lift women up globally. but now, it s useful. it s very interesting. hillary clinton even getting out, taking a swipe at rush limbaugh, knowing she s going to get headlines. again, trying to drag this message out. this narrative along. but the it s learned by all who watch or participate in presidential campaigns, there are events that occur. and we live in a very dangerous world. and this week, we re not talking about north korea or israran or pakistan, all of these things that have not been solved, and then something can happen and all of a sudden it totally obliterates the message control that everyone in the campaign wants to have.
