is really angry about a u.n. tribunal that s investigating the assassination of mr. hariri s father back in 2005. i want to bring in paul salem now, who s the director of the carnegie middle east center. he joins me now from beirut. thanks so much for being with us. how much control is hezbollah in here in this situation? are they in the driver s seat? well, hezbollah has a lot of influence on the opposition. the country is split about equally, both in the country itself and in parliament, between supporters of the opposition and supporters of what s called the march 14 movement led by the current care taker prime minister saud hariri. so politically they have about half of the influence in the government. they are very strongly supported, of course, by syria, which has influence in lebanon, as well as by iran. militarily, of course, hezbollah is very dominant, and they could use their weapons as they did in
