they re seeing such an influx and such a rise in those kinds of cases that they re having to use overflow because they re getting so many patients. a physician i spoke to in the e.r. says he s worked there for decades and has never seen a summer quite like this one. the headline here, phoenix, arizona may be used to hot temperatures but what they re not used to is this many days consecutively. we hit the 18th consecutive stretch of 110 degree temperatures or above. so this is putting a strain, not just on hospitals, also rescuers, first responders, the phoenix fire department, i had a chance to go on a ride along with them. they re not only responding to the normal things, we re talking about heat calls, but then even their normal jobs, going and responding to fires. they re having to struggle to stay cool themselves, jumping into ice baths, ivs in ice packs. there s no end in sight, hoping sometime this weekend, temps cool down a little bit.

thing they have to focus on is trying to get that body temperature down. and so they ve also seen people with third degree burns. when i was shadowing these guys here at the phoenix fire department, they were telling me they found a man just days ago who had third degree burns on his body because he was on the asphalt. so we re talking about temperatures that get so high all around us, but especially on the ground here. you re seeing footage now of when we had a chance to look at how they re doing things differently. they were talking about how they have to put ivs in ice baths. they themselves, the firefighters have to sometimes take an ice bath after a particularly hot call. we ve been on several of these heat calls with them. several people who were saying that they were overheated. we know there s vulnerable populations, many of them people without homes, and jose, you can only imagine how much more difficult doing something like fighting a fire gets in these conditions. these are
