Marie Fishpaw: Thank you for joining us on Heritage Events Live to discuss “Rapid COVID Tests: A Cure for Lockdowns, a Complement to Vaccines.”
Our panel: Dr. Paul Romer, Nobel prize winner, entrepreneur, and professor at New York University; Dr. Michael Mina, an epidemiologist and immunologist who teaches and practices medicine at Harvard; and Doug Badger, a scholar at Heritage with over three decades of developing health care policy at the highest levels of our nation’s government.
For months, our nation’s response to COVID has largely followed an approach of “avoid people, wear a mask if you can’t avoid people, and wait for a vaccine.” A vaccine remains months away from being accessible to everyone.
john dean? yeah, i would just like to expound on what michael said and about the fact that they were investigating a president. this was not the first time, it was the second time. you had an independent counsel both actually, several independent counsels. so this was not as unusual a move for the fbi as is normal procedure. having a president a target is not unusual today as it once was. we re going to talk more after the break about everything ahead. tomorrow, we ll let jeffrey toobin s head explode and come back together. we ll talk about what we should learn about paul manafort and michael cohen. and growing signs of pushback from within the president s own party. we re keeping them honest ahead.
the issues to be investigated were not unusual and were at the highest level of, you know, anxiety within the justice department. all i m saying is that in the ordinary course, this is the way the justice department and the fbi proceeds. there is no ordinary course. this is not ordinary. you re conflating the unusualness of the issue to be investigated with the ordinariness of the process. i think the process was more normal than you do, but we both agree that the circumstances of the investigation were unusual. how can you separate one from the other? it s a process but what are they talking about? john dean? yeah, i would just like to expound on what michael said and about the fact that they were investigating a president. this was not the first time, it was the second time. you had an independent counsel both actually, several independent counsels.
times today that when you re talking about a storm as strong as michael, with miles per hour, just two away from a category 5, there is no good side of a storm like this. there is a better side. and that s what destin has been on. there have been reports of power outages here in okaloosa county. there have been reports of trees down and localized flooding. but no major reports of any injuries or needs for rescue. more than 300 people went to shelters across the county. we do know that the airport here will be reopened tomorrow, but they re still assessing the damage across this county. we re seeing some things like this, and some trees down in communities. we also know that they have been trying to get people to stay away from areas with those downed trees. we know that after the storm is when most of the injuries most of the deaths have happened. so they re asking people, especially once the sun goes down, not to go out and explore. so that s what we re seeing here from the far west
investigation, you really needed to speak with manafort. even if he doesn t have anything that can lead to another prosecution, his testimony in knowing everything that he knew is essential because you have to turn over all of these rocks to make sure that you ve run down every lead. just by simply cooperating, he helps move mueller along. barbara, that raises a question of what michael is saying. from the standpoint of mueller to agree to a deal like this, but my understanding is this doesn t look like a lot of prison time many future for paul manafort. to agree to this kind of deal, do you have a high degree of likelihood not only he s going to sit down and talk to you but you re going to get from that actionable items. items that will be helpful in a potential case you re building? i think so. that s the reason for the proffer. you don t agree until you know the person has information you might be interested in.
