elections. good day. i am chuck todd in philadelphia. it is a city rich in american history and a fitting place to talk about the future of our country less than a week before some of the most important primaries on the 2022 midterm calendar. pennsylvania will be key in the midterms and key in 2024. it may have replaced ohio as the state. we spoke to voters, officials and one of the top republican senate candidates at the center of a very muddled and messy primary. today the focus is on the future of the democratic party and the message pennsylvania democrats appear to be sending is clear as an unorthodox politician appears to be pulling away in the primary. this wasn t expected to be a blowout if you will. according to one poll the lieutenant governor john fetterman is up nearly 30 points over the more moderate congressman conor lamb and malconkenyata. we have an exclusive look at the fettermans, he and his wife in a moment. the question on the minds of democrats around the
he is not planning on resigning i am told very bluntly. he was just elected to a six-year term. there have been a lot of senators with illnesses out for much longer and this is no different i am told. he plans to recover and we ll see how that progresses. i want to bring in cnn s senior medical correspondent on this. you just heard manu s new reporting about what fetterman s symptoms that were led to all of this. what does that tell you? these are very common symptoms of depression. loss of appetite which of course would lead to weight loss. part of it is because when people become clinically depressed they have trouble taking pleasure in sort of every day things, having a nice conversation with a friend or beautiful scenery. sort of eating would be one of those things. another reason might be, and we don t know if the senator has been on antidepressants but sometimes antidepressants themselves can lead to a loss of appetite. this is coming in the broader context of his overall h
incorrectly it ought to be set aside and not counted. what fetterman is attempting to do i don t care what state law says or what the requirements are for legitimate ballot anything that comes in as long as it is received postmarked by election day ought to be counted. the supreme court said no we ll require the law to be upheld. the law also says if the ballot is filled out improperly election authorities have to alert the voter to come in and vote in person or clean up your ballot before election day and we ll count it. fetterman i notice this morning the headlines in the newspapers were trying to count every ballot. no, what he is trying to do is say state law regarding filling out ballots doesn t matter. and the law should matter. that s what gives us confidence is when people follow the rules. bill: i wish we had you for 20 minutes. early voting in 2018 the last mid-term was 40 million. as of earlier this morning we re above 44 million. there is an increase.
