Housing most urgent issue facing Porirua, social services tell council

“You’ll have whanau who will have their relations or friends live with them, rather than [have] them sleep in cars or be on the road sleeping rough, and so that causes health problems, mental health and budgeting concerns – being stressed about how they’re going to make ends meet – and family harm. Ross Giblin/Stuff Porirua Whanau Centre chief excuitve Liz Kelly, left, pictured here with Kitiona Tauira and Helmut Modlik, says overcrowding is the organisation’s biggest concern in places like Cannons Creek, pictured. “You can’t have people living on top of each other, and then their not being a consequence,” Kelly said.

Refugee barber gives back to welcoming community with free-haircut festival

SUPPLIED/Stuff The free haircut day was a way for Anchor Barber Shop owner Tammam Tamim, pictured with 7-year-old Temana Horua, to show his gratitude to the community that welcomed his family after they fled the Syrian civil war. A refugee barber looking to repay the community that gave his family a new home has transformed a Palmerston North whanau centre into a massive free-of-charge barbershop for a day. Anchor Barber Shop owner Tammam Tamim teamed up with community groups WAIORA and Ora Konnect to offer free haircuts at the Highbury Whanau Centre on Monday. Tamim and his family fled the Syrian civil war in 2011, and found a new home in Palmerston North where he started his barber shop in 2019.
