A hushed residential cul-de-sac where Whangārei locals kept to themselves was the unexpected scene of a drive-by shooting that has shocked the city s leader.
Whangārei Mayor Sheryl Mai was enormously grateful no one inside the house on Brunner Tce in Kamo was injured, or worse – killed, when it was targeted in a drive-by shooting believed to be gang-related around 6.30pm last Friday.

Witnesses said they saw about 20 police officers enter the hotel early on Thursday morning and leave soon after escorting a man dressed in red.
A seventh person has been arrested and charged following a serious firearms incident at Auckland’s Sofitel Hotel.
Armed police descended on the luxury Sofitel in central Auckland on April 15 after witnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing three masked men running from the building. The shooting saw armed police swarm the hotel and later lock down a street in nearby Ōrākei. No-one was injured. A 25-year-old man was arrested in Northland on Tuesday morning after police conducted a search warrant in Whananaki, Detective Inspector John Sutton said.

A seventh person has been charged in relation to the Sofitel shooting incident last month.
Detective Inspector John Sutton said a 25-year-old man was arrested in Northland this morning following a search warrant in Whananaki.
The man appeared today in the Whangarei District Court charged with being an accessory after the fact.
