Te Kahui o Taonui, Te Tai Tokerau iwi leaders, met yesterday to discuss how best to protect at risk people, including kaumātua, from the community case of Covid-19 in the region.
Ngāpuhi Pandemic Response project lead Tia Ashby was at the hui and said that if kaumātua did need to leave the home for important appointments, they should wear a mask. We just need to be vigilant and protect our whakapapa, Ashby. Many [iwi] have now engaged resurgence protocols, we ve mobilised our health workforce and extended testing hours [and] all these messages have been communicated out to whānau and to the wider community.

Hapū around Whangaroa Harbour have declared a rāhui on scallop collection, starting tomorrow.
Raniera Kaio from Te Rūnanga o Whaingaroa says a community hui on Monday concluded most of the damage was done by boats dredging the beds at the harbour mouth.
He says people cannot remember having been able to collect enough for customary use in more than a decade.
“There have not been ample for hākari. The numbers have been at just recreational levels, and they have diminished even more in recent years,” he says.

Man on charges
A 31-year-old Northland man will appear in the Kaikohe District Court today facing serious charges including kidnapping and shooting at a police officer. Police were carrying out a search warrant at an address in Maromaku, south of Kawakawa, on Friday morning when they were fired at. No one was hurt, police said. They had visited the property to investigate a kidnapping and assault that happened on November 29. The victim received non-life threatening injuries in the assault.
