The speaker in the poem is looking at Pieter Brueghel’s painting “Landscape with the Fall of Icarus,” which hangs in the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. The painting which researchers in the 1990s determined was actually a copy of Brueghel’s original shows humanity going about its work (the farmer plowing, the angler fishing, the shepherd tending his flock) as, in a remote corner of the canvas, Icarus is drowning in the sea after his waxwork wings have melted.

Youthful radiance and earnest sincerity characterize the singing of tenor Brian Giebler, a Syracuse native, in his first solo recording “A Lad’s Love,” which is up for a Grammy Award on Sunday. If there were more tenors with voices as clear, weightless and inviting then maybe song recitals wouldn’t be such a rarity.
Besides the polished performances by Giebler and pianist Steven McGhee, what also makes the recent disc from Bridge Records so beguiling is the intertwined thematic strands that unite the repertoire. The selections are songs composed by five British men who lived during the first half of the last century. Among them, Benjamin Britten is the best known and also the youngest.
