Driver charged with DWI in crash that killed high school senior

Daniel A. Diaz, 18, of Vineland, was riding a bike westbound on West Park Drive near North Third Street in Vineland around 8:30 p.m. on April 29 when he was struck from behind by an SUV driven by Phillip J. Cox, 54, according to a crash investigation report.
Both vehicles were traveling in the same lane of traffic and Diaz was thrown from his bike by the impact and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Cox was given a sobriety test at the scene, found to be intoxicated and arrested. At the police station, he provided breath samples and his blood alcohol content was measured at 0.12%, according to police, which exceeded the legal limit of 0.08%.
As if the year hasn t been hard enough on them, the seniors at Vineland High School are all mourning the loss of a classmate whose life was taken as he was riding his bike.
NJ.com reports that 18-year-old Daniel Diaz, a senior at Vineland High School set to graduate this year, was killed after he was struck while riding his bike down a Vineland street in Cumberland County. Diaz was pedaling down West Park Drive in the mid hours one late April evening when he was struck by an SUV. The SUV reportedly hit him from behind.
The 18-year-old was reportedly tossed off of his bike as result of the impact which left him dead at the scene. Now, new reports are coming to light that claim the driver has been hit with charges of driving while intoxicated. The driver reportedly blew a .12 which is clearly over the legal limit of .08. He was hit with those charges as well as one for reckless driving.

Bicyclist killed in crash with car in N.J. city

A bicyclist was killed Thursday night when he collided with a car in Vineland, police reported.
A 54-year-old Vineland man was driving an SUV west on West Park Drive near North Third Street shortly after 8:30 p.m. when he collided with the cyclist, who was also traveling westbound in the same lane, police said.
The bicyclist, identified as Daniel A. Diaz, 18, of Vineland, was pronounced dead at the scene.
No charges had been filed as of Friday morning, but the crash remains under investigation.
