Public transportation ridership numbers still are a long way from pre-pandemic levels, but they are showing a slight rebound that has Westmoreland County Transit Authority officials hopeful better times are ahead. “We’ve had a little bit of an increase,” Executive Director Alan Blahovec said at the authority’s monthly business meeting. “We’re seeing an improvement, and we’re starting to show that we need more drivers.” The authority’s door-to-door shared ride program, operating under the Go Westmoreland banner, broke the 500-ride daily threshold last month for the first time since the pandemic caused ridership to crater in March 2020. At its height, Go Westmoreland provided more than 800 daily rides.

Westmoreland County officials announced Tuesday it will open a coronavirus vaccine clinic later this week at Seton Hill University in Greensburg. The clinic, with vaccines provided by Walmart, is set to vaccinate up to 1,400 residents over three days, starting April 9, according to Public Safety Director Roland Mertz. “We’re trying to make more of these happen,” Mertz said. Appointments for first doses of the Pfizer vaccine are available for three dates, April 9, 13 and 14. To register for an appointment call 1-800-753-8827 and select Option 1 when prompted. Mertz said on-line registration is not available for the clinic.
