3 APRA HARBOR, Guam (May 21, 2021) A Columbus, Ohio, native and 2018 Westland High School graduate is serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the deployed Independence-variant littoral combat ship (LCS) USS Charleston (LCS 18).
Airman Elisa Morales joined the Navy as an Aviation Machinist’s Mate shortly after graduating high school and is a member of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 21, which is currently assigned to the Charleston.
“My older brother was in the National Guard, and I definitely knew I wanted to do some form of military so I could go to college,” said Morales. “My mentor told me about how I could travel and do interesting things in the Navy as well as go to college after, so I started looking into it.”

A threat against two students prompted Wednesday s closure at Westland High School and deputies have an increased and highly visible presence at the school Thursday, according to the Franklin County Sheriff s Office.
South-Western City Schools said classes were canceled Wednesday out of an abundance of caution after the district received information early that morning from law enforcement.
The sheriff s office said in a tweet Thursday that deputies will remain vigilant to ensure students and staff at the high school are safe.
Authorities have not released any other details regarding the threat against the students.

The South-Western City Schools District says Westland High school is closed on Wednesday out of an abundance of caution due to a potential safety issue.
The district says they received information early Wednesday morning from law enforcement about a potential issue at the high school.
The closure today allows the district to meet with law enforcement to develop a plan to ensure safety in the future.
The full letter sent to parents reads: Early this morning we received information from law enforcement about a potential safety issue at Westland High School today. Due to the timing of the information, we have decided to close Westland High School today, Wednesday, April 7, out of an abundance of caution and to give us time to meet with law enforcement officials to develop a plan to ensure safety moving forward. Westland High School will reopen Thursday with increased security after South-Western City Schools officials decided not to open Wednesday based on information from law enforcement, the district said.
In a letter to parents, the district said information was received from law enforcement about a potential safety issue and due to the timing of the information, the district made the decision to close the school Wednesday.
The district said the decision was made out of an abundance of caution and to allow district leaders to meet with law enforcement to develop a plan to ensure safety moving forward.
No shuttle service was provided between the high school and South-Western Career Academy on Wednesday.
