Cyclone Ianos Brings Setbacks and New Beginnings for Farmers in Central Greece

The National Herald 5/6/2021 The National Herald      KARDITSA In mid-September 2020, a Mediterranean cyclone appeared in Greece for the first time. Large swaths of the country, from the southern Ionian to the Sporades and Crete, were faced with heavy winds, torrential rain, and flooding. Four people lost their lives. In Karditsa, Cyclone Ianos wiped out more than 13,000 livestock animals, while also destroying homes and property. The region’s stock farmers lost their herds overnight, and with them whatever financial security they had and every hope for the future. In the days after the disaster, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) launched an effort to help the affected farmers. In collaboration with the nonprofit organization New Agriculture New Generation, a close partner of SNF, initial contacts were established in the field to explore the best ways to provide assistance. Eventually, through a grant from SNF, 700 farm animals were purchased for local stock farm

The big infrastructure projects to start during 2021 - Which projects are heading to 2022

More than 100 projects with a budget of more than 10 million is at this time in a competitive process. These projects cover the whole range of constructions and either concern, large public works such as metro line 4, or building-PPPs for student homes in universities, concession projects such as underwater Salamina, energy projects such as natural gas networks, and classic Infrastructure projects  for water supply, drainage, reconstructions, etc. An important part of these competitions is assessed by the market that it will be able to constitute this year. The time is particularly critical as one year since the beginning of the pandemic has created a new environment in which constructions need new projects.

GTP Headlines Commission Approves Works on Central Greece E65 Highway

Photo source: GEK Terna The European Commission gave the Greek Infrastructure and Transport Ministry the go-ahead to proceed with the construction of a road network linking the town of Trikala with the main Egnatia Motorway budgeted at 442 million euros. The northern section of the Central Greece motorway known as E65 is 70.5 km in total and will include the construction of the central roadway as well as support roads and links. The approval paves the way “for the completion and operation of a part of the Trans-European road network without causing undue distortions of competition”, said the Commission in a statement.
