STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Now that the holidays are officially over, it’s time to start thinking about getting rid of the Christmas tree.
The city Department of Sanitation (DSNY) will collect clean Christmas trees curbside from Monday, Jan. 4, through Friday, Jan. 15, weather-permitting. According to the DSNY website, the trees will be chipped, mixed with leaves and turned into compost for New York City’s parks, institutions and community gardens.

People crowded onto sidewalks. They filled bars and restaurants. There was eating and drinking, sometimes to excess.
There was controversy too over the fact that members of the LGBTQ+ community were not allowed to march in the parade under their own banner. Miss Staten Island, Madison L’Insalata, who’d announced that she was bisexual, was among them.
It seems like a lifetime ago, right? It was our last normal day.
Two weeks later, Staten Island was under lockdown because of coronavirus and nothing has been the same since.
