When gold medal-winning cyclist Brian Fowler had a heart attack while driving, pulling his car over outside a Canterbury school during the busy afternoon pick-up likely saved his life. The retired Olympic and Commonwealth Games athlete lost consciousness at the wheel outside West Rolleston Primary School, leaving him fighting for his life. Fowler, 58, said it had been “touch and go for a minute”, but parents and school staff – noticing he had parked across the driveway – came to his rescue.
