The Plan Commission again refused a request to demolish three buildings in the heart of State Street for a six-story housing project with commercial space.
Hovde Properties wants to raze five century-old buildings with distinctive terra cotta façades, including the former Silver Dollar Tavern, but the Madison Trust for Historic Preservation is objecting.
Hovde owns most of the buildings, which have been largely empty for decades, but also recently secured an option to buy the building that houses the Silver Dollar Tavern.
