For the first time in its history, and thanks to a wave of generosity by friends, families, neighbors, and partners, West Island Community Shares announced in a May 5 release (continued below) a record-breaking $1.4 Million being distributed to the community following their annual fundraising campaign, known as the West Island Solidarity Fund.

The Solidarity Fund was set up not only to provide financial support to meet urgent needs of the community during what was a very difficult year, but also to give community organizations the financial support they need to provide crucial services during the recovery period.
The pandemic has shone the light on three areas of vulnerability in our region that needed additional support, such as at-risk families, vulnerable women and underrepresented cultural populations. The Artist Circle of the West Island, is a group of local artists who meet on the third Tuesday of each month to encourage each other with presentations done by accomplished artists, demonstrating skills and techniques using a variety of mediums and artistic styles. âAfter almost a year since the beginning of the pandemic, West Island Community Shares is recognizing local West Island businesses and their employees who went above and beyond in their fight against COVID- 19,â said Albena Petkova.
The West Island Community Sharesâ (WICS) Development & Communications Manager was discussing the non-profit agencyâs honouring of area merchants and businesses who stepped up during these trying times.
âMany local businesses and their employees have played an important role in the fight against the virus, and often did so behind the scene,â said Petkova.
Due to COVID 19, WICS was unable to hold its major fundraiser â the Red & White dinner and wine tasting event. âThis year, although we couldnât host our biggest annual fundraiser due to the sanitary restrictions, we didnât want to miss the chance to highlight local companies and their employees who have taken a leading role in the battle against COVID-1
