Sunday, March 7 marks the 56th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, the day peaceful protesters were brutally attacked and beaten by Alabama state troopers on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in 1965 while marching for their right to vote. Events surrounding the commemoration, which normally take place the first weekend of March, will be mostly digital due to efforts to stop the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. The weekend’s largest event, the Selma Bridge Crossing Jubilee, will be completely digital this year.

(WALB) - The Albany Police Department (APD) is currently investigating three shootings that happened overnight and a suspect in connection to two of the shootings is now in custody. Just after midnight on Friday, near a motel in the 800 block of West Highland Avenue, 59-year-old Daniel Bonham was found shot. He was listed in critical condition about 5 a.m. Friday morning. At a 9:30 a.m. press conference, APD officials said he was still being treated at Phoebe.

(WALB) - A Cuthbert man was shot multiple times outside an Albany nightclub over the weekend, according to the Albany Police Department. Police responded to the Phoebe Putney East Campus about a man who was shot in his right arm and the right side of his body. It happened sometime between 2:30-3 a.m. Sunday morning in the 300 block of West Highland Avenue, behind Polite’s Lounge, according to APD. The victim told police he was standing outside of the club when he was shot. The victim also told police that he wasn’t in an altercation with anyone, and didn’t know who shot him.

Allen, 22, of the 1700 block of Epworth Lane, was charged Saturday with driving under the influence. • Richard Blackburn, 39, of the 1600 block of Griffith Avenue was charged Friday with non-payment of court costs and fees, first degree trafficking in a controlled substance (meth) and receiving stolen property under $10,000. Daviess County Sheriff’s Office • Holly Gillaspie, 35, of the 5400 block of Hiahleah Court was charged Friday with theft by unlawful taking under $500, parole violation and non payment of court costs and fees. Owensboro Police Department • Alexandria N. Askin, 26, of the 1900 block of Prince Avenue, was charged Saturday with theft of identity of another without consent.

(WALB) - Bethel AME Church will host a turkey giveaway on Tuesday, Dec. 22, starting at 10 a.m. Church officials said they will be handing out 150 turkeys to families. The giveaway is on a first come, first serve basis. The church is located near the Albany Civic Center. Participants will need to drive onto the church campus from West Highland Avenue and make a left turn into the church’s parking lot. Participants are also asked to wear masks.
