Firefighters were able to contain the flames to the second story, but smoke and water damage throughout the structure has left the rest uninhabitable for now, Lanning said.
A family that lives on the first floor is on vacation in Florida and family members have been notified of the blaze, he said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Chemung County fire investigation team, New York State Police and Chemung County Sheriff s Office.
Community Fire & Rescue got mutual aid at the scene from the Erin, Odessa, Spencer, Candor and Newfield volunteer fire departments.

CORNING - One person died in a house fire on West Hazel Street on Saturday afternoon, officials said Sunday.
The person has not been identified, and the fire is under investigation, Corning Fire Chief Brad Davies said.
Firefighters were called at 3:05 p.m. to the structure fire at 11 W. Hazel St., Davies said. Dark smoke was seen pouring from the upper floor of the two-story house. The home has significant fire damage on the first and second floor, Davies said.
Firefighters brought the fire under control around 4:30 p.m. One firefighter was injured at the scene, but was not taken to the hospital.
NEW HAVEN, Connecticut (WFSB) New Haven police are investigating after a bullet struck a school window this morning.
It happened just after 8 a.m. on Thursday at the Achievement First Amistad High School on Dixwell Avenue.
The school went into lockdown mode, but it has since been lifted.
School officials said no students were inside the classroom at the time, and no injuries were reported.
A spokesperson for the school released a statement saying “We take very seriously any event in our school that could present a threat to the safety of any of our students. We will have additional police presence outside our campus over the next few days. Simultaneously, we will take all actions necessary to support our students’ mental, emotional, and physical safety.”
