Firefighters were able to contain the flames to the second story, but smoke and water damage throughout the structure has left the rest uninhabitable for now, Lanning said.
A family that lives on the first floor is on vacation in Florida and family members have been notified of the blaze, he said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Chemung County fire investigation team, New York State Police and Chemung County Sheriff s Office.
Community Fire & Rescue got mutual aid at the scene from the Erin, Odessa, Spencer, Candor and Newfield volunteer fire departments.

Legislators debate resolution that pushed term limits to 20 years
The Evening Tribune
BATH Faced with an unexpected budget crunch in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the economy, Steuben County legislators turned to the past for guidance.
Offering early retirement to county employees was floated as a way to help get through the worst of the pandemic. District 1 legislator Gary Swackhamer, a Hornell Republican, was on the board the last time the remedy was used to replenish county coffers.
“It worked real good before, and it worked good this time. We didn’t have to lay people off,” Swackhamer said. “That was a question, had we done it before? The legislators that were on at that time could give you an idea what the results were.”
